Karski–Zygielbojm. The Story of a Conversation

mtrebacz@polin.pl Author Biographyhistorian, head of the research Department of the Polin Museum of the History of Polish Jews and assistant professor at the Center for Jewish Research at the University of Lodz. His research interests include the socio-political history of the 20th century, with particular emphasis on the history of Jews and biographic studies. He was a participant in several international grants in the field of the history of the interwar period and the Second World War, e.g. "The Ringelblum Archive - full edition". He published the book Izrael Lichtenstein (1883–1933). Biografia żydowskiego socjalisty, he is co-editor of the volumes: Zagłada Żydów na polskiej prowincji oraz Józef Zelkowicz. Notatki z getta łódzkiego (1941–1944).

Abstract
Jan Karski’s meeting with Bundist Shmuel Zygielbojm has long been known from only one side. In an unstructured part of the Zygielbojm collection stored in the YIVO archives in New York, notes from the meeting written in Zygielbojm’s hand have been preserved. Using these previously unknown documents, this article allows us to look at that famous meeting, symbolizing wartime Polish-Jewish relations, in a new way and raise questions not only about the course of the conversation, but above all about the effect. The information obtained during it changed the way Zygielbojm looked at the situation of Jews in occupied Poland.
